The Gap — Honest Assessment

You need to triple your weekly volume and quadruple your single-swim distance. At 63, with a CAC score of 123 and a proven Z2 aerobic engine, the physiology is there — but the gap is large and the no-wetsuit rule in 58–65°F water is the biggest unknown.


Realistic Phased Roadmap


Phase 1 — Volume Foundation (Now → Dec 2026)

Complete your 8-week post-10K plan through Aug 30 (12K target). Then:

  • Build weekly volume to 20–25K by October

  • Add a 3rd weekly OW session in fall

  • Introduce cold water acclimation — start tracking water temp, begin swimskin (legal) to cold tolerance

  • Target milestone: 15K continuous OW swim by Dec 2026


Phase 2 — Marathon Build (Jan–Jun 2027)

  • Weekly volume 30–40K peak

  • Monthly long swims: 15K → 18K → 20K → 22K progression

  • Book with Angela (or equivalent) for all swims 15K+ — kayak escort mandatory from here

  • First night swim — 3–4 hour session off La Jolla with escort, post-sunset

  • Cold water training: get in the water October–February without wetsuit (La Jolla winter water drops to 58–62°F — that's your free training tool)

  • Target milestone: 20K+ continuous by June 2027


Phase 3 — Qualifier & Application (Jul–Sep 2027)

  • CCSF application requires medical, CV, 45-day advance notice minimum

  • Complete a documented 24K+ qualifying swim (observed and logged)

  • Book a CCSF-licensed pilot — slots fill 6–12 months out

  • Build support crew: crew chief, kayak escort, boat crew (4–6 people)

  • Practice midnight-start training swim × 2


Phase 4 — Taper & Attempt (Oct–Nov 2027 or Spring 2028)

  • Peak volume 50–55K, then 6-week taper

  • Attempt window: October 2027 (water 66–70°F, calmer Pacific) or postpone to May 2028

Pace Projection

At your 10K pace of 2:34–2:37/100m sustained — which you will NOT hold for 14 hours — a realistic channel pace is 2:50–3:00/100m (fatigue degradation + cold + night). At 2:55/100m over 34,000m (current-adjusted): ~16.5 hours. That's at the long end but well within completion range for trained masters swimmers.


The Single Biggest Risk: No Wetsuit in Cold Water

La Jolla winter water (Jan–Mar) hits 58–62°F. Start January 2027 doing 1-hour wetsuit-free OW swims and progressively extend. This is your most important training adaptation — cardiovascular more than muscular. Your CAC 123 requires your cardiologist to clear you for this specifically.

Good news: there is no mandatory time cutoff from CCSF. The official rules set no maximum time limit. However, the pilot sets a practical cutoff based on weather windows, boat fuel, and crew endurance — typically 18–20 hours on water is the real ceiling before a pilot calls it.

What Actually Matters More Than Pace


1. Cold water endurance — swimming 14–17 hours in 58–65°F in a triathlon suit is the primary physical test. Your tri-suit-only training habit is already building this tolerance. By October 2027, after a full winter of La Jolla cold water sessions, you'll be adapted.

2. Night swim tolerance — most swimmers who DNF do so in hours 8–12, not from exhaustion but from psychological breakdown in darkness. You'll need 2–3 documented night training swims before the attempt.

3. Fueling over 14+ hours — your 10K protocol (7 feeds) scales to ~20 feeds for the channel. Gut training for continuous fat oxidation during a midnight-to-afternoon effort is the gap to close.


Bottom Line


Your pace is fine for Catalina — you're well inside the pilot window. The gaps to close between now and Oct 2027 are cold adaptation, night swim experience, and 14-hour fueling capacity — none of which are pace problems.

Most open water swimmers rely heavily on sighting — lifting their head every 6–10 strokes to spot landmarks, buoys, or the escort boat. Each sight costs energy (hip drop, stroke disruption) and over 14+ hours adds up to thousands of wasted movements.


You've trained to trust your FORM instrumentation, which means:

What it gives you on the channel:

  • Stroke rate discipline — you'll feel any Z3 drift in your SR before your HR responds. Built-in early warning system across 14 hours

  • Pace consistency — no surging off the start in darkness. You know exactly what 2:55/100m feels like from the display

  • Reduced sighting fatigue — your escort kayak handles navigation; you swim head-down and check pace/HR on the display. Far less cervical strain over a 17-hour effort

  • Night swim advantage — in total darkness, sighting is impossible anyway. Your instrumentation-first style is exactly how elite night channel swimmers operate


One thing to add to your training:

Practice swimming a consistent straight line without sighting — FORM tells you pace and HR but not your heading. Your escort handles that, but you need to trust a metronome-style stroke that doesn't veer left or right over hundreds of meters. Some swimmers drift 10–15° off course without knowing it — currents compound this over a 33K crossing and can add 2–4 km to your total distance.

A simple drill: pick a distant point, close your eyes, swim 200m, open and check your deviation. Do this weekly in the pool. It's a Catalina-specific skill that almost no one trains explicitly.


FORM's Swim Straight feature uses the goggle's IMU (inertial measurement unit) to detect lateral drift and gives you a real-time correction alert in the HUD. You're already doing what most Catalina swimmers never train for.

For the channel crossing this means:

  • Navigation is handled — escort sets the heading, FORM keeps you on it stroke by stroke

  • Current correction is automatic — when the Davidson Current or tidal push nudges you off line, FORM catches it before it compounds into a 500m course deviation

  • No cognitive load on heading — at hour 10 in darkness, decision fatigue is real. Having one less thing to manage mentally is significant


The only gap: FORM Swim Straight is calibrated for pool and relatively calm OW. In Catalina's 3–5 ft ocean swell at 2 AM, the IMU may register lateral motion from wave action as drift. Worth testing in choppy La Jolla conditions specifically — swim a known straight-line course (Children's Pool to Kellogg) and compare your actual GPS track from Apple Watch Ultra against what FORM's Swim Straight was telling you.

Your full instrumentation stack — FORM pace + SR + Swim Straight, Apple Watch Ultra HR — is genuinely more sophisticated than most solo Catalina swimmers have used. That's a real edge.
